An approach to teaching...

Imitate --> Integrate --> Innovate
Imitate

1. Beginner Player – highly directed by the teacher, always encouraged to sing while playing; and always learns through the Natural Learning Process. Experiences melody, harmony (including function), as well as regular movement activities for rhythm internalisation. Ideally taught in a class environment with a parent involved in the learning.

Integrate
2. Music Player – a shared direction of playing songs, participating in formal training which may include exams, recitals as well as singing and playing current pop music. Starting to play with chords to build an understanding of harmony. Developing improvisational skills through structured activities in melody and harmony; continues to experience rhythm vocally and through movement. Ideally a student will have a weekly class lesson and a monthly private lesson with parent sitting in from time to time.

Innovate
3. Music Maker –have a knowledge of chordal harmony and relationship to melody. Knowledge and understanding of tonality as well as keys. Has achieved technical facility to play at a high intermediate level. (Approximately Grade 4 - 5 level). Ability to improvise, play from chord charts, sing independently of playing ie. not playing what is being sung. Has the ability to analyse pop songs and chordal function. Ideally the student will have a weekly class & private lesson. Keeping parents informed on the goals and achievements.

4. Teacher is Coach – student directed learning using the teacher as a coach to achieve the goals they wish to achieve. Lessons will be as required.
